'Walk for Skin Health'

The skin is the largest organ of the body and accounts for about 16 percent of a person’s body weight. It is flexible, waterproof, and covers the entire outside of the body. It performs several important roles, including acting as a barrier, regulating influence between the outside environment and the controlled environment within our bodies, as well as providing assistance to the liver, kidneys, and intestines in the removal of waste.

In addition, because so much importance is attached to our appearance (and therefore the skin), any skin problems can also have a major psychological and social impact on the person affected. This makes it vitally important to support skin health on an ongoing process.

'Walk for Skin Health' is an initiative of Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation (VITSAF). It is an annual event dedicated to skin diseases awareness/enlightenment campaign for a better understanding of the numerous skin conditions that affect millions of lives in Africa. Walk for Skin Health is equally created for fundraising of different Skin conditions and their organization in Nigeria and around Africa. Skin is the largest organ of the body and determinant of physical acceptance and level of social acceptance especially when having anything unusual on it and it is usually being classified as not life threatening meanwhile the most life threatening as one who couldn’t be accepted by anyone due to difference in skin can opt for some deadly decisions including suicide and zero quality of life.

   World Health Organization

WHO definition of Health

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Mission: To create awareness and increase understanding of skin diseases that affect millions of people in Nigeria and around Africa through annual Walk for Skin Health & its workshops. And as well raise funds for campaigns and research for cure and improvement on quality of life.

The fact is that skin disease does not discriminate in terms of who it affects – rich or poor, man or woman, adults and children suffer alike on a daily basis, both emotionally, physically and psychologically, most devastating chronic skin diseases (eg Vitiligo) usually do have with a major impact on both patients and their families, skin diseases in Nigeria are mainly being diagnosed by self, chemist shops, cosmetic sellers, pharmacists, nurses, Doctors other than Dermatologists in Nigeria, making one of the most misdiagnosed conditions. Patients usually seek medical attention from appropriate quarters (Dermatologist)  when its already late. Walk for Skin Health is here to help change that.
