WELCOME TO VITSAF

VITILIGO SUPPORT AND AWARENESS FOUNDATION

Vitiligo is a condition in which people lose melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color – resulting in white patches of skin. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown and there is no cure, although there are some treatments that can lessen the condition’s effects.
VITSAF derives its existence and emergence as a result of lack of understanding and support for people living with Vitiligo in Nigeria and West Africa where so many assumptions about the condition holds sway. It is created to bolster the diminished confidence and the low self esteem usually experienced by persons distressed by Vitiligo and also addresses the issue of stigmatization and solution to the condition.

Vitiligo psychosocial aspects

A person with Vitiligo must cope with more than a skin condition. The change in appearance caused by Vitiligo can affect a person's emotional and psychological well-being. Vitiligo is frequently experienced as a stigma. Stigma in this case is defined as “characterized or branded as disgraceful or ignominious”. Stigmatization is a huge social problem. There are values in society that lead to stigmatization of people who look different.

Social categorization and assumptions about appearance contribute to the above mentioned situation in regard to Vitiligo. This includes the perception of any image altering condition as a stigma. Stigmatization may play a significant role in the way Vitiligo is perceived. It is important the degree to which a person with Vitiligo has internalized these stereotypes (ex. importance of appearance). They can be related to fear of negative evaluation, anxiety, and depression. As a result, everyday activities may be affected.

MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER

Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation (VITSAF) was born out of my personal experience living with Vitiligo and thus three convictions that aroused from my experiences:

First, to educate the general public through extensive awareness and enlightenment campaign for better understanding of the condition – Vitiligo. Secondly to identify, inform and counsel persons distressed by Vitiligo primarily in West Africa, set up support group centres and a Vitiligo Resource Centre.
